!FUN HIGHLIGHTS!

FUN is on it's way! - Parks, Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) recently received it's first major donation to Fresno United Neighborhoods (FUN), the departments non-profit arm that aims to improve the quality of life in Fresno by expanding grant opportunities for PRCS services, empowering neighborhoods and community groups by offering non-profit partnership and allowing businesses a tax write-off for donations to parks and recreation.  Just before the start of the Starbucks / FUN 'movie in the park night' in the Rotary Amphitheater of Woodward Park on August 13th, Starbucks Regional Operations Manager John Bennett unveiled an oversized check and announced to the crowd that Starbucks is committed to increasing fun in Fresno by donating $5,000 to FUN

The free movie attracted over 1,000 people and is just the first of many potential FUN / Starbucks events.  Starbucks was recognized on August 30th by the Fresno City Council for their generous contribution and commitment to FUN and parks and recreation.  Pictured from left to right are:  FUN Chairman Bob Hall, City Councilmen Jerry Duncan, PRCS Director Randy Cooper, Starbucks' Cardell Moore and John Bennett.

The FUN fund will build capacity for PRCS in the following ways:

  1. Greatly expand grant opportunities. (Most foundations will not fund municipalities.)
  2. Empower neighborhood and community groups without non-profit status, so that they can fundraise through FUN
  3. Give private citizens and the community a tax-write off for the donation of land and equipment, which PRCS needs.
  4. Receive funding by being embarked through the United Way funding system.
  5. Provide new funding sources for the construction / improvement of parks. With a nonprofit, private and corporate groups can donate money for commemoration on a specific feature or amenity in a park. (i.e.: softball / soccer fields, gymnasiums, benches, walkways, picnic shelters, sculptures, etc.)
  6. Expand partnership opportunities
  7. Partner with area corporations, such as Home Depot, to help build pocket parks.

This non-profit is a function of:

PRCS is establishing a non profit as a major engine of capacity-building. Fresno United Neighborhoods (FUN) is a 501 (c )(3 ) community services agency whose mission is to improve the quality of life in Fresno, California, through innovative and collaborative outreach initiatives in recreation, health, and learning. FUN will replace the CERIAL (Community Educational Recreational Instructional Activities League) non-profit, which was more narrowly focused on after school and summer camp programs.
